"Dear ********,
This
is the story of when a madman with a box called a TARDIS came and took me away to
The
Battle of Chickamauga, September
19–20, 1863, where I met my great-great-great grandfather, Corporal James
Madison Carter of 125th OVI Co K. I do not know why I went with the
madman, who asked that I call him “The Doctor” but I did. Wow am I glad that I
did!!

This was the start of the Civil War, so to
fit in I changed from my t-shirt and jeans to a dress with a hoop skirt. I felt
like a bell with my legs as the clapper but I loved it! There were guns and cannons
going off all around me and the smell of gun smoke hung in the air but it was
worth it to meet him.
Being there and seeing great-great-great
grandfather Carter was amazing but so was helping the Union Soldiers with The
Doctor. I had been to and participated in reenactments back home but that was
nothing like being there. Nothing could have prepared me for the death, for the
injuries, nor the beauty. There wasn’t the “urban sprawl” that we have in 2014.
I just wish I had had more time to take in some of the beauty. Instead: I was
helping wash wounds, cooking meals, and relaying messages among the enlisted
men.
September 20th came quickly and
I had to bid farewell to my great-great-great grandfather, who would never know
of his significance to me, and be back home in time for church on the 21st."
I am probably going to include a picture of myself in my reenacting clothing as well as the picture of my great-great-great grandfather, but I need to find a good one first. :)
