Have you noticed that these people who claim to be so open minded just...AREN'T?! These people claim that they are so open minded that they accept a person for who they are. Unless you happen to be a Christian who sticks to your convictions and shares them with others. Or unless you happen to be a conservative to their being a liberal. Or.... Or.... Or....
You know what I'm talking about. How many people "unfollowed" you on Twitter or stopped being your friend on Facebook, MySpace, or even in real life because of difference of opinions?
I refuse to be open-minded. If you are too open-minded, your brains fall out. I also refuse to be close-minded. If you are too close-minded you don't see the potential in something new and inovative. I choose to be me-minded. I know my own mind and I use it.
If I stopped talking to someone just because they didn't agree with me on every point, I'd never have had a boyfriend much less gotten married & had kids. I also wouldn't have any friends at all. I've had gay friends and straight. I've had liberal friends (and husband) and conservative. I've had Christian friends and non-Christian. Same goes for people I "follow" on Twitter, blogs I read, and so on... I don't choose my friends based on whether or not we agree. What is the fun of only being around people who agree 100% with you on everything? How will you ever learn more about your beliefs if you do not know people who have differing beliefs?
What prompted this post? I had someone whom I followed on Twitter post a Lady Gaga retweet saying: "If you oppose gay marriages, unfollow me." So I asked her (chick who retweeted it) if she meant it. Apparently she did since she unfollowed me. Now, do I care that I lost a follower on Twitter? No. Could care less. However, it does bug me that this particular chick knew my feelings on the subject before she ever even started to follow me on Twitter to begin with. THAT bugs me!
She's not the first to do this though. All my life I have had "friends,"* online and off, who knew my feelings on whatever subject before we became "friends" yet when I would be outspoken on my beliefs they would run the other direction and shun me.
How on EARTH is THAT being open-minded??
