I just read a blog entry where a step-mother wrote that her stepkids are not the beneficiary of her life insurance policy and neither is her husband (she's not his either, just his kids).
I was floored! I mean, if it works for them that's fine but wow!!! It was never even a question for Hubby and I. He put me and I put him (i no longer have any life insurance of my own but he has some for me if that makes sense). We both put all three kids as beneficiaries. It was a no-brainer for us.
In fact, I just re-typed out our wills (though still need to get them notarized so are legal) because I found out that M would not count in my generic wording of leaving things to our "living children". So I had to re-do my will to be able to name him specifically as a beneficiary of my will. It wasn't a question for us. He's a member of our family so he should be included.
Obviously, as with anyone in a blended family, we have reservations about whether or not *he* will actually receive what is left to him if something were to happen to us before he turns 18. I'm sure she has the same reservations about us if something were to happen to her. (yes we would make sure whatever would go into an account for him to be used for college or whatever once he becomes of age....just an fyi in case she's found my blog again) I look at this, though, I can't worry about what might or might not happen after I am gone. Sure she might keep whatever meager amount is left for herself but she might not. Either way, M will see it and will know.
Anyway... all this to say I thought that was weird! I had never heard of someone doing this before.
